Chapter Eight

“This isn’t fair!” Serene shouted and stomped her foot. Silas had just informed her Evan Brewer would not be allowed back on the property and she was forbidden from seeing him again.

“No, it’s not fair, and I’m sorry, but I have to do what’s right for this family.”

“How is not allowing me to marry the man I love right for me?” Tears soaked her cheeks. “I love him, Silas.”

“You only think you love him, Serene.”

“Did you only think you loved Celia, brother?” Anger simmered in her words, and Silas flinched away from it. “How can you deny me the same love you had? The happiness Celia brought to you? How is that right for me or for Evan?”

“There are things you do not know, Serene, things about him…”

“What things? That he’s kind and gentle? That he would rather stay home than attend court and deal with all the politics? That he lives a simple life rather than the extravagance we were brought up with? It doesn’t make him less worthy. I would think you’d want my future husband to be all those things.”

“Serene, I understand you are upset, but my word is final on this. Do not test me. If I find that you have disobeyed me, you will not like the consequences.”

“Just because you lost the love of your life, it does not mean you get take mine from me so I’m just as miserable as you are!”

She turned and stormed out of the study, slamming the door behind her.

Stunned, Silas stared at the door. How could she have said something so cruel to him? Even angry, Serene had never been cruel. It had to be Brewer’s influence on her. It cemented his decision. Cutting her off from Brewer had been the right choice.

Silas slumped down in his father’s chair. His chair, he reminded himself. He had to start thinking of his father’s things as his. Maybe he’d take the children and Serene back to London to the townhouse he’d bought himself. The one Celia had decorated with such care.

To the town where Evan Brewer did not go.

He didn’t know what to do, honestly. He was floundering. Ever since Benj had told him about this Fallen Angel, he’d been all mixed up. Confused, angry…vengeful.

If it was the very last thing he did, he would find a way to destroy this creature who had taken his wife from him.

There was a knock, and he bid them enter. Benj came in followed by two men he did not recognize. These men must be the hunters Benj told him of yesterday.

“Silas, allow me to introduce Lincoln Cooper, Earl of Lincolnshire, and his son, Frederick. I’m not sure you’ve met them before.”

“Aye, I have.” Silas stood and came around the desk to shake the men’s hands. “We’ve attended a few of the same functions in London.”

“It is good to see you again, my lord.” Lincoln gripped his hand. “Allow me to deliver my family’s condolences over the heavy loss you’ve suffered these last few weeks.
